SUMMER JAZZ WORKSHOP KRYONERI JULY 12th - 18th 2013 Video

This workshop is an intensive week-long summer Jazz course, which is organized by the non-profit organization "Filoxenia" for first time.

The idea is to give possibilities to all people (without age limit) to develop their music skills in Jazz context.
In this first workshop we will welcome tutors from the U.S.A., the Czech Republic & Greece, who are well known musicians and have kindly accepted to participate and share their experience and knowledge with us. The event is open to beginners, intermediate and professional players. During the workshop, the participants will improve their abilities in playing their instruments, in group playing and also in Jazz music theory. The workshop participants will practice every night at the much-favored jam sessions. The event will include a tutors concert and a final concert including all participants, both open to local community.

Participation certificates signed by the tutors will be issued for all participants having attended regularly the lessons.

Students is required to register on July 12th, 2013, 6 p.m at the latest, at the Hostel Elisson in Kryoneri, where the detailled workshop programme will be given to them.

DAILY SCHEDULE:

9:30–10:45 morning lecture (ear training, rhythmic warm-up, jazz harmony lecture)
11:00–13:00 instrumental master classes

13:00–15:00 lunch break
15:00–19:00 ensembles rehearsals
21:00–24:00 jam-session and concerts

SKIP WILKINS (USA)
Piano

Skip Wilkins is an American jazz pianist who splits his time between Eastern Pennsylvania and Central Europe. While in the U.S. he makes his home in the town of Delaware Water Gap, PA. When in Europe, he is based in Prague, and tours regularly throughout Central Europe. A prolific composer, Skip has released ten CDs, with the eleventh slated for release in early 2013.

Skip lived in Prague continuously for fifteen months during a sabbatical from his teaching position at Lafayette College between June of 2011 and August of 2012. In addition to his active concert and recording schedule, he taught at major summer workshops and gave additional workshops and masterclasses in a variety of conservatories, music schools and other venues, notably at the Janacek Academy of Musical Arts in Brno. While in Prague, he directed the Skip Wilkins Singers, a twenty-voice choral ensemble that performed his arrangements and compositions. He recorded three CDs with various groups, headlined at major festivals, and performed often on live television and radio.

In Central Europe, he tours with three main groups that are based in Prague: SuperTrio – WUH (Wilkins, Franta Uhlir & Jaromir Helesic);

Skip Wilkins Quartet, featuring Libor Smoldas (Wilkins, Smoldas, Tomas Baros & Tomas Hobzek), and Rostislav Fras – Skip Wilkins Quintet (Fras, Wilkins, Neil Wetzel, Josef Feco & Gary Rissmiller). Czech Radio Prague released the CD, Frýdlant Nights, in conjunction with the February 2010 US tour of the Fras – Wilkins Quintet.

Major performances in the Czech Republic include his recent nationally-televised concert performance at Prague Castle, in a state event for the retiring Czech President; the Karel Velebny Summer Jazz Workshop in Frýdlant; Janackuv Maj in Ostrava; Brno Jazz Festival; Trutnov Jazz Festival, Přerov Jazz Festival, Vsetin Jazz Festival, Hello Jazz Weekend (Uherske Hradiste and Kyjov), and in the top Prague jazz clubs, including Jazz Dock, Reduta, U Maleho Glena and Agharta.  He headlines annually at Schlot in Berlin, and performs often in Bavaria, where recent credits include Birdland Neuborg, Lindau Jazz Club (on the Bodensee), the Burgthann Jazz Festival and Jazz Night in Coburg.

Skip’s 2012 SteepleChase Lookout CD release is Father & Son, featuring his son Daniel, a budding tenor saxophone star in NYC, and the stalwart tandem of Scott Lee on bass and Jeff Hirshfield on drums. In the trio with Lee and Hirshfield, he released two Dreambox Media CDs in 2011, including a set of standards, I Concentrate on You, and another of his originals, After. He has four previous CDs on Dreambox Media: The Paint-Peeler (2008), Skip Wilkins Solo—Live at Lafayette  (2007), Skip Wilkins Quintet: Volume II  (2007), and Volume I (2006), and two earlier CDs with flutist Jill Allen, including Petty Theft (2001, Cathexis Records), which features saxophonist David Liebman. He also performs and tours often in the U.S. and Europe with his children, Daniel and Emily.

Skip’s earlier performance credits include David Liebman, David Sánchez, Stanley Turrentine, Bobby Watson, Plas Johnson, Mark Murphy, Clark Terry, Conte Candoli and Peter Erskine.  Skip is Associate Professor of Music at Lafayette College, where he teaches music theory and jazz courses. He is also a member of the adjunct staff at Moravian College, teaching jazz piano.

Libor Šmoldas (CZ)
Guitar

Libor Šmoldas (1982) is a Prague based jazz guitarist and composer. Besides top Czech and European musicians he has worked and recorded with international stars such as George Mraz, Jeff Ballard, Sam Yahel, Bobby Watson, Adam Nussbaum, Brian Charette, Joel Frahm, Jay Anderson, Stephen Keogh and more.

He has worked and recorded on numerous occaisions as a sideman for Brian Charette, Skip Wilkins, Ondrej Pivec, Bobby Watson, Yvonne Sanchez, Brian Fentress, Zeurítia and others.

He has recieved a Berklee Collage of music scholarship in 2005.

In 2011 he has toured the USA with his Czech quartet and made appereances in New York (Smalls), Washington DC, Richmond, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and more. While in the United States, Libor recorded with Nussbaum, Anderson, Mraz, Ballard and Yahel. Working on several other projects, Libor had the opportunity to present himself in China, Australia, USA and of course most of well-known European cities.

With legendary saxofonist Bobby Watson they toured and recorded an album which will be out in the 2013.

As a teacher he works at the advanced jazz department of the Jaroslav Ježek's Prague Conservatory. Libor has tought at several jazz camps in Sydney Australia, Prague, London and Germany. He also did some masterclasses at several colleges in the USA.

Since 2009 Libor has been member of the board of the Czech Jazz Society which organizes Czech Jazz Workshop.

Dan Wilkins (USA)
Saxophone

Tenor saxophonist, Dan Wilkins is young artist on the New York jazz scene. Entering his Senior Year at the Manhattan School of Music, Wilkins has been studying with alto saxophonist Steve Wilson, tenor saxophonist Rich Perry, drummer John Riley, pianist Phil Markowitz and pianist Garry Dial. He plays lead tenor in the Grammy-nominated MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bobby Sanabria.

In High School, Dan was selected for the government funded 5 week summer program at the Pennylvania Governor's School for the Arts. He soon began studies with the great David Liebman and was selected for Liebman's 2008 Summer Saxophone Masterclass. A member of the NJPAC Jazz for Teen's program, Dan was selected as one of four for scholarship program to study for a week at the Prinz Claus Konservatoire in Groeningen Holland. In 2009 Wilkins was a finalist for the Gibson-Grammy Band and a member of the Philadelphia Grammy Band.

Wilkins has performed at many respected jazz venues in both America and Europe. Among these venues are the Iridium Jazz Club, the Deer Head Inn, Chris' Jazz Café, Puppets Jazz Bar, Tutuma Social Club, the Miles' Café, Little E's Jazz Club, Agharta Jazz Club in Prague and Schlot Jazz Club in Berlin.

He has had the great pleasure to perform with David Liebman, Jeff Hirschfield, Phil Markowitz, Bill Goodwin, Tony Marino, Mickey Roker, Scott Lee and Dan Monaghan among many others.

Spyros Panagiotopoulos (Greece)
Drums

Started his career in music playing drums. In the mid 80’s he studied classical percussion at the Athens Conservatory. Since then he started his Professional career playing drums on stage as well as recording in discography with famous Greek singers.

(G. NTALARAS, H.ALEXIOY, A.PROTOPSALTI, J.PARIOS, M.LYDAKIS, EL.ARVANITAKI, E.TSALIGOPOYLOY, TANIA, YSANAKLIDOY, M.MITSIAS, D.SAVOPOYLOS, V.MOSHOLIOY, MELIN KANA, LAV.MAHERITSAS) and lots of others.

He has participated into more than 450 discography recordings (1500 songs) with the above mentioned singers as well as with many other distinguished performers of the greek musical stage.

The kind of music he always loved even since his first steps into it is Jazz.

In early 1990 as a founding member of the well known jazz group “PAGE ONE” he opens the door to the Greek jazz stage, with concerts all over Greece. He performs at “DIVA” jazz club, participates in the HOUSE BAND of D.VASILAKIS for the K.GIANNOYLOPOYLOS “JAZZ CLUB” TV show where he had the opportunity to play together with m any Greek and foreign performers.

He worked with famous European jazz performers as MARKUS STOCKHAUSEN, ARLID ANDERSON, A.SHEPPARD, B.HOFSETH.

He accompanied many famous American jazz singers as DEBORA DAVIS, MODINHA, JEAN PARKER, CARLA COOK, CAREL LOOPS on their performance in Greece.

Since 1993 Spyros Panagiotopoulos teaches drums at the conservatory “F..NAKAS”.

As a professor and with the support of the conservatory “F..NAKAS” as well as of the “PRINCIPLES OF TECHNIQUE AND EXPRESSION””.

He has accompanied the famous pianist DENIS MONDGOMERY in his performance at the amphitheatre of “F. NAKAS” conservatory, as well as almost all jazz performers from “BERKLEE” university of Boston., Who were invited by “F. NAKAS” conservatory, during their seminars and concerts.

Periklis Trivolis (GR)
Double Bass
Born in Athens in 1975, started his music studies at the Conservatory Philippos Nakas with music theory, harmony and electric bass.

From 1998 to 2001 he studies jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he also accomplishes studies in acoustic bass.

From 2003 he has been working in Athens as a professional musician and is cooperating with many outstanding artists, Greeks and foreigners as well, in jazz.
