Article by volunteer Ilias Dadfar Spanta in Lechovo, Western Macedonia ( 9.2023 - 6.2024)

Ι had the opportunity to volunteer in the beautiful village of Lehovo, Greece, where I supported the local cultural association, Profitis Ilias, and engaged with the community in various ways. My role encompassed community support, publicity, translation, and social care, all of which enriched my understanding of Greek culture and history. I had numerous tasks to fulfill during my voluntary service mostly concerning the community. I assisted the Profitis Ilias Cultural Association in organizing village events, which included setting up venues, preparing materials, and coordinating logistics. It was a unique way to see how Lehovo celebrates its heritage, and I felt privileged to be part of such lively events, fostering a sense of unity among villagers. I also contributed to the “Paths of Peace” project by managing social media and website updates to highlight Lehovo’s cultural and historical sites. I crafted posts, edited images, and shared stories that drew attention to the village’s landmarks and beautiful landscapes, aiming to attract both locals and international visitors.

My language skills were put to use translating various documents into German and English. This task involved promotional materials, historical documents, and website content, making Lehovo’s offerings accessible to a broader audience and enhancing the reach of local initiatives. One of my most rewarding tasks was digitizing Lehovo’s historical archive. Working with old photos, documents, and records, I helped preserve the village’s history for future generations. This project required meticulous attention to detail and gave me an appreciation for the region’s rich past. Moreover I offered social support for elderly residents. I spent time with two elderly women in the village, providing companionship and assisting with daily tasks. It was a heartwarming experience, allowing me to connect deeply with the locals and understand life in Lehovo through their stories and perspectives. Adding to the tasks in hand, I also accompanied tourists and visitors on excursions around Lehovo, offering insights into the village’s history, landmarks, and the “Paths of Peace.” This task allowed me to share my love for the area while enhancing my knowledge of its cultural significance.

Adapting to village life and communicating in Greek were initial challenges, but the welcoming nature of the Lehovo community made the adjustment easier. The chance to support the village’s elderly and engage in the “Paths of Peace” project were definite highlights, making my time in Lehovo both impactful and unforgettable. Volunteering in Lehovo gave me hands-on experience in cultural preservation, community support, and international outreach. I am grateful for this journey, which left me with lasting friendships, a deeper understanding of Greek culture, and a sense of accomplishment.
