The Eschwege Youth Exchange is a cultural and educational programme which brought ten participants from a vocational school in Eschwege, Germany, for an enriching experience in Kryoneri Korinthias, Greece. The 2024 event was the second edition of this initiative, building on the success of the inaugural session and continuing to emphasise cultural exchange, teamwork and hands-on learning in an international setting.
The programme was divided into several key activities. The main focus was a community service project to clean up the area around the ruins of a historic water mill in Kryoneri. This effort was in preparation for a future seminar aimed at renovating the mill, a site of historical significance in the region. In addition to this community work, participants had the opportunity to explore local culture and history, including a trip to Akrokorinth, a prominent archaeological site known for its ancient fortress and stunning views. The group also visited a vocational school in Kiato, which gave them the opportunity to observe and compare vocational education practices in Greece with those in Germany.
The Eschwege Youth Exchange took place over ten days, from 15 to 24 April 2024. The programme balanced structured activities with free time, allowing the participants to engage with the local culture and environment. Afternoons and weekends were reserved for leisure, giving participants time to rest and explore the surrounding area. The exchange had a significant impact on the participants, providing them with increased cultural competence and an appreciation of international cooperation. They gained practical experience in community service and conservation, contributing to the preservation of local heritage. The work carried out at the historic watermill site was also an important step towards its future restoration, demonstrating the positive impact of youth-led initiatives on community heritage projects.
